We are sad to inform you of the passing of fellow member William S. Beinecke. He passed away peacefully on April 8, 2018. He was the Chairman of The Prospect Hill Foundation and The Sperry Fund, originally named The Sperry & Hutchinson Foundation. Along with his late wife, Elizabeth Gillespie Beinecke, he founded The Prospect Hill Foundation in 1959. The Beinecke Scholarship Program, founded in 1971, continues to be the main project of The Sperry Fund. In addition to the institutional philanthropies, he gave personally and generously to many nonprofit organizations, large and small. We are organizing a public event to celebrate his life, to be held on Tuesday, May 22, the date of what would have been his 104th birthday. More information about this will be forthcoming. There will be a small private reception for family and close friends on Wednesday, April 11 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be directed to the Central Park Conservancy, the institution that Bill Beinecke founded in 1980. As its board’s first founding chairman, Bill Beinecke led the effort to conceptualize a partnership with the City of New York to restore and manage Central Park, a gem among the great public institutions of New York City.
Mr. Beinecke joined the Society in 1959. Please join us in remembering our fellow Patriot and Life Member.
The American flag will fly at half mast at Fraunces Tavern on Wednesday, April 11 in memory of William S. Beinecke.
