Washington’s Farewell, Exclusive Museum Members Event

On December 4, 1783, nine days after the last British soldiers left American soil, General George Washington gathered in the Long Room of Fraunces Tavern with his officers and delivered an emotional farewell. As document in Benjamin Tallmadge’s memoir, General Washington told his officers, ‘With a heart full of love and gratitude I now take leave of you. I most devoutly with that your latter days may be as a prosperous and happy as your former ones have been glorious and honorable.’The memoir is part of the Museum’s collection and is currently on exhibit in the Mesick Gallery.
Museum Members will spend this evening with drink, food, and a reading from Tallmadge’s memoir by a historical reenactor. Members must RSVP by November 26. Please send RSVP to

The Henry Burbeck Papers: From the American Revolution to the Present*

Henry Burbeck joined the American artillery service in the weeks following the Battles of Lexington and Concord, serving almost uninterrupted for the next 40 years. From 1802 to 1815, Burbeck held the title of service. The Curator of Manuscripts from the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor will be leading a discussion about Brigadier General Burbeck and the Clements Library’s recent acquisition of over 2,300 letters and documents pertinent to the life and career of this dedicated military officer.
