Evacuation Day Festivities
Veteran Corps of Artillery, State of New York during the Evacuation Day Parade, November 22, 2008 |
November 25, 2008 marked the 225th Anniversary of the British evacuation of New York City. Evacuation Day truly brought the Revolutionary War to an end. Citizens rejoiced when George Washington paraded through Lower Manhattan as the Americans regained control of the city. This year, festivities took place from November 22 through November 25 in and around the Fraunces Tavern® Museum. On November 22, representatives from various SRNY, DAR and other societies as well as members from different branches of the U.S. Armed Forces marched the same route General Washington took starting at City Hall and ending at Bowling Green Park. On November 25, Revolutionary War re-enactors, including portrayals of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Continental and British soldiers, concluded the day’s activities with a cocktail reception and dinner at Fraunces Tavern®. The day’s events included the laying of wreaths at the grave of Alexander Hamilton and the Prisoners of War memorial at Trinity Church. Federal Hall hosted the reenactment of a speech given by Washington and a ceremonial handing over of the keys to New York City.

Thank You and Farewell: Amy Adamo After five years with the Fraunces Tavern® Museum, Director Amy Adamo will be leaving us to become the director of a historic museum out of state. Amy’s role as Director has included conservation, historic research and interpretation, exhibits and events. During her time here, Amy successfully completed the important job of cataloguing and archiving the museum’s art and artifact collections into one database, turning research and collections care into much more manageable tasks. Equally as important, Amy has overseen the conservation of our John Dunsmore art collection, part of which is currently on display in the new Dunsmore Gallery at the FTM. She has brought in numerous lectures and events such as book talks from authors Barnett Schecter, Thomas Fleming and Harlow Unger and our popular annual Christmas concert with Linda Russell and Friends. Amy will be missed and we wish her the best in her new venture.
